We met Marc Lacrimosa at the Blade Show in Atlanta. His knives covered a small corner table of the Gear2Survive booth. Marc did 12 years in the Army, 10 more as Search and Rescue with the Civil Air Patrol, and 14 years in law enforcement, and now he’s putting that experience to good use – designing knives.

It didn’t start this way. In fact, Marc started as a distributor for John Benson and Shadow Tech knives. He tells us that their reversible clip really drew him in, and it turned out to be a good relationship. When Marc was ready to design a knife, Benson’s company assisted – and that’s what we were looking at in a small corner of the G2S booth at Blade Show – Marc and Shadow Tech’s baby – the GS2 Bushcraft knife.

Here’s the first thing I want to say about this knife before I jump into it further. We had this knife out testing it and shooting some video when another staff member happened upon us. The first thing he said, when he handled the knife was, “Wow. That feels like an ESEE – only better.” To be frank, he nailed it.

The GS2 Bushcraft knife looks, feels, and even smells a bit like an ESEE knife, but the handle is more comfortable and balance feels just a bit better.

The version Marc graciously let us review and demo has an army green powder coat and green canvas micarta handle scales. It’s hefty. The 3/16″ 1095 H.C. full tang steel is heavy in the hand, which in our opinion makes the knife feel even better.

The jimping on the spine is perfectly placed for extra thumb grip during cutting, and the finger guard keeps your digits out of harms way. We were impressed with the sharpness of this knife out of the box. Feather sticking was easy – push, drag a bit and let the heft of the knife do the work. And though the blade is only 4″ long, you can see in the video that chopping isn’t a problem (yes, the granny smith tasted good on a summer day – thanks for asking).

We should also note that this knife is perfect for fine detail work. It’s not too big or cumbersome to deal with like other Bushcraft knives we’ve played with. The drop point will let you get in for the details and the blade width (across the face of the knife) really lets you get onto this knife with your whole hand.

IMG_0586The Kydex sheath was adequate, nothing to write home about, but it did it’s job properly and the reversible clip was useful.

What was missing?

Not much, but we do wonder how much the value and usefulness would increase if Marc was to add some fire-starting helpers to this knife.  We’d love to see a fire spindle cup embedded in the handle and a 90-degree spine for ferro striking.

Summary

This is a great 9″ Bushcraft knife. It feels like an ESEE, only better. We just wish it had a smidge more to offer in the survival/outdoor for fire starting.
