The Gerber Freescape Lockback is a nice addition to your camping trip. It features a rubberized grip handle, a secondary lock system, and generous finger guard to allow for firm and safe use of the knife in any conditions. The Gerber Freescape is just a simple, effective, fairly safe, camp knife that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
One of the most important things needed on an outdoor knife is a nice grip. Being confident in your grip can easily be the difference between normal use and accidentally slicing off a finger. Gerber has taken steps to give the Freescape a grip texture that you can be confident in.
The Freescape’s handle has a small hexagon style pattern molded into the handle. They would give you decent grip in most conditions but they wouldn’t be enough in wet conditions. To make this design better, Gerber added an outer rubberized layer to provide a better grip. And, the base of the handle features a lanyard hole molded into the rubber that can help control and secure the knife to give you an extra layer of protection.
The Freescape’s handle also has a very futuristic black and neon green color scheme, which is repeated in the Freescape’s sheath. This makes the knife extremely easy to find in your pack or if you’ve set it down in camp.
The blade is coated with a titanium nitride coating to protect the carbon-rich 7Cr17Mov steel. Not only does the coating look cool and tactical, it also protects the blade from developing rust spots while in wet climates. Using this blade is very comfortable, because it can be opened ambidextrously with dual thumb studs. The jimping on the handle gives you confidence when having to delicately cut something.
The lockback mechanism wasn’t great for one-handed operation, but it secured the blade firmly in the open position every time. You will notice there is a switch on the back of the knife just below the lockback button, this is a secondary safety lock. When engaged, this switch prevents moving the blade from the open or closed position. This is just another layer of protection by preventing you from accidentally closing the blade on your finger or opening it in your pocket.
