Not everyone wants to EDC a folding knife. In fact, many people like the look and feel of a good belt knife, but they tend to go a little bigger than necessary. The compact, full tang design of the Schrade SCHF58 and its molded thermoplastic sheath make this knife an easy knife to throw on your hip every day. And, this mid-level fixed blade is available for under $13. You just can’t beat that.
First, the 8.125″ SCHF58 features full tang construction and a 3.6″ 65Mn high carbon steel drop point blade. A stonewash coating gives it some limited protection from the elements. This knife is about as straightforward as it gets. It’s a simple 1/8″ thick drop point with a nicely jimped thumb ramp and a good-sized forefinger groove for protection from the blade.
In comparison to other, higher-end fixed blades on the market, we would love to see this SCHF58 add a partially serrated iteration to the mix. Sometimes that little bit of serration comes in handy when you’ve really got to saw through something.
The double-riveted handle scales are sculpted G10, which makes them impact resistant and easy to grip. The base of the handle features a lanyard hole that passes all the way through the tang. It fits the hand nicely without being bulky.
The molded thermoplastic sheath holds the SCHF58 snugly and features a removeable/adjustable molded belt loop/clip. Built-in eyelets allow this knife to be attached to just about anything, and Schrade also throws in a ferro rod and striker that attaches to the sheath.
Another thing we just can’t leave out is price on this high carbon fixed blade. We found it online for $12.99. That’s way less than most knives at this build level. At that price, you could buy a couple and have a backup always attached to your adventure pack.
