First things first, the Leatherman FREE series is awesome. The lineup debuted earlier this year with the P series of pliered multi-tools and was followed with the addition of the smaller, more Swiss Army Knife-styled T series. After some waiting, the new Leatherman FREE K series – Knife series – is here. This one is more like a modern folding knife than the others, but it still includes useful tools that you expect in any Leatherman. Like Leatherman says on the box, they aim for an “easiest-to-carry form factor,” and the K series fits that bill.
The K2 and the K4 still feature Leatherman’s innovative FREE technology. That’s easy one-handed use of the knife blade with all outside-accessible tools. These knives feature 420HC stainless steel blades. The K2 includes 8 total functions: Knife, pry tool, package opener, awl, bottle opener, Phillips screwdriver, medium screwdriver, and an extra-small screwdriver. The K4 adds a pair of spring-action scissors to the mix. If you frequently carry a modern folding knife, you won’t even notice the extra tools are there until you go to use them.
The K2 has ergonomic aluminum handles available in dark gray or silver for each model. The silver comes with a combo edge blade and the gray models feature plain edged blades. Extras include an ambidextrous pocket clip and a lanyard/accessory hole.
