Most of the time Spyderco knives are easy to identify at a glance. The enlarged thumb hole, the handle shape – all of these are distinctive to the Spyderco lineup, even when the blade is somewhat different. The new Spyderco Hanan Flipper definitely breaks that mold and presents itself as something very different in this year’s lineup.
Custom knifemaker Brad Southard designed the Spyderco Hanan. He combined a flipper-style opener with Spyderco’s patented Compression Lock mechanism. The Hanan is sleek and different. It almost reminds us of the Benchmade Crooked River, but smaller.
Hanan means “gracious gift” in Hebrew, and the Hanan is the gift that keeps on giving. It features a 2.95″ CPM-S30v stainless steel blade that is slightly recurved with a full flat grind. At 6.83″ overall and just 3.88″ closed, the Hanan rides tip-up in the pocket (righty or lefty).
The G10 handles feature something you just don’t see on most Spyderco knives: Bolsters – titanium bolsters to be exact. The bolsters and scales meet seamlessly at a sweeping arc and are radiused for comfort. Since the Hanan is a flipper, the traditional Spyderco thumb hole shrinks down to just 5mm, which is far smaller than most, and a high-strength Compression Lock mechanism locks the blade during use.
