Brian Lai says he designed the Spyderco Amalgam to be “an amalgam of the different design elements from [his] favorite knives and designers.” Indeed, it is all-things-Spyderco combined with great elements from other knives. The result is a medium-sized, easily carried pocket knife that’s incredibly versatile and absolutely ambidextrous.
The first and most unique feature of the Amalgam: the 3.8” CMP S30V drop point opens with either a flipper or Round Hole. The Round Hole provides an infinitely controlled opening. The flipper opening is lightening fast. Both methods provide a smooth-as-silk open. Spyderco tells us this is because it “rides on special low-friction ball-bearing washers that give it an incredibly smooth action and help ensure swift, positive, one-handed opening.” It also has a full flat grind and Spyderco’s notoriously great edge geometry. Once open, lockup is secure with a nested Spyderco compression lock.
Mounted on skeletonized stainless-steel liners with an open back construction, the textured carbon fiber and G-10 handles provide a slip resistant grip.
Finally, to make this the easiest of carries there’s a four-way, fully reversible pocket clip. At a total weight of about 4.3 ounces, the Amalgam is an incredibly light and easy ride in your pocket.
